Gilberte’s World

A Film by David A. Masterwille

A quest for leisure and holidays takes a filmmaker from continental Africa to the beautiful Indian Ocean Island of Mauritius where he is hosted by Gilberte, his renowned celebrity painter friend. When Gilberte suddenly suffers mental breakdown, the filmmaker puts his holidays on hold and becomes a pillar of support for Gilberte as she struggles through conflicts emanating from family, work and life in general.

I am a filmmaker from Ghana, a beautiful country on the west coast of Africa. My home is close to the Greenwich Meridian (Longitude 0°) and a short boat ride into the sea is the Equator (Latitude 0°). So, like many of my compatriots, we like to say that we live right at the center of the world.

However, this rapidly modernizing country has many social problems, chiefly among them is a widening inequality. So, for a number of years now, I have been making films that shed light on some of these issues.

I am both a fiction and non-fiction filmmaker. My documentary films mainly address social-political and environmental problems arising out of Ghana and Africa.

Some of my documentaries include Gold Is Here (2014). Gold Is Here screened at festivals in Africa, Europe and America. It won award for best documentary at a film award in Ghana in 2016; Scapegoats (2017) and Surgeons (2018). The film is still screening publicly with two screenings booked in August 2018 at Goethe Institut’s African Perspective program, and Nubuke Foundation’s Ghana Must Go: Forward program as well as a screening at the Danish Ambassador’s residence for embassy staff and the Danish community in Ghana.

I am presently at a pre-production stage of my second narrative feature Obaamu - Uncommon Passage, with production slated for December 2018.
