Too-Tash

A Film by Dariusz Sipowski

Synopsis

‘Too-Tash’ is a short documentary from the Pamir Mountains in Tajikistan. An old Kirghiz nomad tells a tale about past times, when people and ghosts used to live together.
Adun Mergen was a famous hunter, who travelled alone and always shared his prize with those in need. Once, when sleeping in a cave, he was approached by a wild ghost. The next day, when following trails, he discovered imprisoned people and gave them freedom by killing ghosts and moving a large rock.
Many years later, there is still a group of nomads staying in Pamir, surrounded by high mountains and animals. They know there is a different world somewhere far, but they want to stay with their land.
Rare visitors too this land could find living so far from civilisation unbearable. For the nomads, each rock has a meaning, like the large one located close to their yurts called ‘Too-Tash’, which means ‘Camels Rock’. The ghosts are not so common to see now, but nomads know they are still living beside them.
